About Shenandoah University

Established in 1875, Shenandoah University is a private liberal arts college located in Winchester, in the state of Virginia.

Founded by Dr Abraham Funkhouser and Professor Jay Fries, the institution was originally known as Shenandoah Seminary and in fact, it did not become known as Shenandoah University until as recently as 1991.

In 1960, the institution moved to its current 126-acre campus in Winchester that is now the main campus, with five other smaller campuses located nearby. The university recently upgraded its campus with improvements to residence halls, a new 2.5-acre landscaped garden, various renovations and the brand new Health & Life Sciences Building.

There are more than 80 student clubs and organisations that help to bring students together, as well as the university’s 21 athletics teams, known as the Hornets, who compete as members of Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Notable former students include actress Kate Flannery, best known for her role as Meredith Palmer in TV series The Office, as well as Lost actor Harold Perrineau, and Carter Beauford, drummer of the Dave Matthews Band.
