About Marietta College
Marietta College is a private liberal arts institution in the far south west of Ohio. One of the oldest colleges in the country, Marietta was founded as Muskingum Academy in 1797, and accredited in 1835.
It is located in the centre of the small, old town of Marietta, the first permanent settlement in the country’s North West Territory, scattered with historic landmarks and 19th century architecture. Situated on the banks of the Ohio River, barely a mile from the border with West Virginia, Marietta is 100 miles south east of Columbus, Ohio, and 70 south west of Pennsylvania.
The coeducational college has won various accolades in recent years, including multiple best in the Midwest titles. Its petroleum engineering and athletic leadership programmes are among the most celebrated. In total, it runs more than 40 undergraduate programmes plus master’s courses in psychology and physician assistant studies. There are various study abroad opportunities. Although most Marietta students are from Ohio and neighbouring states, an increasing proportion are from Asia.
Its baseball team, one of more than 17 varsity outfits, has won a record number of third division College World Series titles.
Mariella College alumni include Charles G. Dawes, the 30th vice president of the United States under Calvin Coolidge and Nobel Peace Prize winner who gives his name to the Dawes Plan, and Joy Williams, a Massachusetts-born novelist and short story writer.
