About Hartwick College
Hartwick College is a liberal arts college in Oneonta, New York state, founded in 1797. The college was originally founded as a seminary in accordance with the will of the Lutheran minister John Christopher Hartwick. The seminary was incorporated by New York State in 1816 and in 1928 a college department, offering four-year programs, was opened in Oneonta a few miles from the old seminary building. In 1968 Hartwick became independent and since that time the college has continued to grow and modernise.
Today, Hartwick has a relatively small number of undergraduate students studying a wide rage of subjects. The college offers bachelor’s of arts or bachelor’s of science degrees across 31 majors and offers pre-professional programs in law, medicine and engineering among others. Hartwick also offers an innovative three year undergraduate option, allowing students to gain their bachelor’s degree in three years instead of the traditional four. This has proved popular with students due to the reduced tuition costs.
The college campus features its own observatory as well as a museum, craft food and beverage centre and library alongside the red brick academic buildings and historic university hall. There are also numerous sporting and leisure facilities available for use by the student body.
Hartwick’s Pine Lake environmental campus, situated 8 miles from the main college, comprises woodland, wetland and a lake. The campus provides students with a place for hands-on research and offers collaborative, interdisciplinary learning opportunities. It is also the site of the Pine Lake Institute for Sustainability Studies.
