About Hastings College
Hastings College is a liberal arts college in Nebraska, USA with ties to the Presbyterian Church. The college was founded in 1882 by a group of citizens from the town of Hastings. The idea of a Christian liberal arts college was first suggested by the town’s civic leaders in 1873 when the town itself was just a few years old and received a warm welcome from the other settlers. The first classes were taught on the second floor of the town Post Office in 1882. Two years later the first university building, McCormick Hall, was completed. The university has grown its student body and broadened its academic offering over the years but it retains the goals of its founders, the creating of caring graduates who will make good citizens in their communities.
Today Hastings College is home a small number of undergraduates studying a broad range of subjects. The college offers upwards of 60 majors and 14 pre-professional courses allowing students to broaden their learning in a number of different ways, including their Personalised Program which gives students the opportunity to plan their own course of study to fit their requirements.
The college campus spreads over 120 acres in the city of Hastings. The academic and administrative buildings are dotted through the green landscaped lawns and linked by tree-lined pathways. McCormick hall is still the centre of the campus and a certified historic building. The campus is also home to state of the art laboratory facilities, residential halls and sports and leisure facilities as well as the college’s own observatory and arboretum.
