About University of Massachusetts Lowell

The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) is a research university based in Lowell, Massachusetts. It is part of the University of Massachusetts system. 

Behind UMass Amherst, it is the second largest educational facility in the state. The University was originally two separate institutions, which were founded in the 1890s: Lowell State College and Lowell Technological Institute.

UMass Lowell offers a rich variety of bachelor, masters and doctoral degrees, including some of their most renowned courses in engineering, criminal justice, education, music, science and technology. 

It is also one of very few universities in the US to offer undergraduate degrees in meteorology, sound recording technology, nuclear engineering and plastics engineering. 

These courses are offered under the umbrella of six schools and colleges: the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Health Sciences, College of Sciences, the Francis College of Engineering, the Graduate School of Education, and the Manning School of Business.

There are more than 200 student-run clubs and organisations based on campus, which offer students a chance to get involved in a wealth of activities. These include: Off-Broadway Players, American Meteorological Society, American Chemical Society, Concrete Canoe Team and Foreign Film Club (FFC).

Athletic teams – nicknamed the River Hawks – at UMass Lowell compete in in NCAA Division I. Sports on offer, for both men and women, include: baseball, basketball, cross country, ice hockey, lacrosse, track and field, and soccer. 

Notable alumni includes Craig Charron, a former professional ice hockey player and prolific player in the American Hockey League, Harish Hande, a social entrepreneur who is expanding solar energy across India, and Shelagh Donohoe, an Olympic Silver Medalist in Women's Rowing.
