About University of Louisville

The University of Louisville (UofL) is based in Louisville in Kentucky, and is a member of the Kentucky state university system. 

The university has roots dating back to 1798, and it was the first city-owned public university in the United States. 

The university consists of 12 schools and colleges, which include: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, J. B. Speed School of Engineering, School of Dentistry, and the School of Medicine.

The university has three campuses in the Louisville area – the Belknap, the Health Science, and the Shelby – yet it also has an International Campus in Panama, as well as various satellite facilities in the state of Kentucky. 

On its main campus, there is an art museum, planetarium and Auguste Rodin's original sculpture of The Thinker for students to visit and enjoy. Moreover, in the city of Louisville, UofL students can go to the zoo, the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival or the famous Kentucky Derby horse race. 

The university has a strong media presence on campus with a student produced radio station called WLCV, which was founded back in 1968. There is also an independent student-run weekly newspaper – The Louisville Cardinal – that was founded in 1926, and has maintained financial and editorial independence since 1980. 

Athletic teams at the university are called the Louisville Cardinals or the Cards and participate in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Sports on offer for students to participate in include: baseball, basketball, rowing, cross country, football, track and field, soccer, tennis and golf.

Notable alumni include Bob Edwards is a Peabody Award-winning member of the National Radio Hall of Fame, Johnny Unitas, a former professional American football player in the National Football League, and the late Frank Neuhauser, who won the first National Spelling Bee in 1925 when he successfully spelled the word "gladiolus”.
