About Wartburg College

Wartburg College, a four-year liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, offers more than 50 majors, including engineering science, public health, actuarial science, business administration, religion and philosophy, music therapy, and biology, all rooted in a liberal arts tradition.

The college offers more than 15 music ensembles (open to all majors), 22 athletic teams and more than 80 student organisations, including honour societies and academic organisations, as well as more focused groups in spiritual life, the performing arts, service and interests (such as an International Club, Black Student Union, and Alliance), and sports and recreation. The college also offers an Urban Studies Programme in Des Moines, Iowa, and Denver, Colorado. The programmes, which have an academic and internship component, provide Wartburg students with experiential learning opportunities in an urban setting.

The college is named after Wartburg Castle, an 11th-century structure in the central German state of Thuringia where Martin Luther sought refuge during the Reformation. It enjoys a formal partnership with the castle, facilitating visits, exchanges and other opportunities.

Wartburg is located 115 miles north east of Des Moines, the state capital, and 60 miles south of the Minnesotan border.
