About Mount Mercy University
Mount Mercy University is a liberal arts college with a core curriculum focused on peace and justice. Five concerns form the pillars of learning at Mount Mercy: earth, immigration, nonviolence, racism and women.
The university was founded in 1928 as a women’s college by the Sisters of Mercy. The college changed from a junior school to a four-year college in the 1950s and opened its doors to men in 1969.
Undergraduate and graduate programmes are on offer at the university, including bachelor’s of arts, science, business administration and science in nursing. There are more than 40 majors in eight departments: Business, Communication, Literature and Arts, Education, History, Politics and Justice, Natural and Applied Sciences, Nursing, Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Psychology, Sociology and Social Work.
Graduates can study for master’s in areas such as criminal justice and strategic leadership. Mount Mercy also offers evening and weekend accelerated education programmes for adults in partnership with local Kirkwood Community College.
The Catholic faith of the Sisters of Mercy remains central to life at Mount Mercy University. Students are encouraged to demonstrate values of service and charity through volunteering. Daily Mass takes place on campus.
The university is located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on 40 acres dotted with trees. The city has a blossoming arts and culture scene, with several museums and theatres. 24 miles of trails for biking and walking wind around the city.
