About University of West Georgia
Founded in 1906, the University of West Georgia (UWG) is a public university based on a 645 acre campus in the town of Carrollton, based just fourteen miles from the state border with Alabama.
Undergraduate study at UWG is offered at the colleges of Arts & Humanities, Science & Mathematics, Social Sciences, Education, Business, and the school of Nursing. In the graduate field there are four doctoral programmes (Education and a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology), two offered exclusively online, one traditional learning, and another a hybrid of the two.
Freshman are required to live on campus, and will receive guaranteed housing. Some activities on campus are intramural and club sports, and the Campus Centre Ballroom has over 12,000 feet of space for anything ranging from banquets to conferences. The Centre for Student Involvement is dedicated to promoting a dedicated and fully integrated student body, whether students are living on-campus or commuting. University events are often held at a three stand arena known as the Coliseum.
Athletics teams are known as the Wolves, and compete in the NCAA Division II. There are a total of five men’s sports programmes and eight women’s, including tennis, track & field, and volleyball. Opened in 2009, University Stadium is host to the UWG American football team, and can host up to 9,500 spectators.
Alumni of UWG include Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, country music singer Zac Brown, gold medal Paralympian Shea Cowart, researcher of near-death experiences Raymond Moody, and broadcaster Todd Grisham. The university motto is simply ‘Go West’.
