About Southern Connecticut State University
Located in the town of New Haven, SCSU is a liberal arts and research based institution first opened in 1893, making it the third oldest campus university in the state. New Haven’s tree planting programme has given it the nickname of the ‘Elm City’, and education is at the centre of the town’s economy, also hosting the world famous Yale University.
Academics at SCSU is is divided among five schools; Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, Health & Human Services, and Graduate studies. The graduate school at SCSU is one of the largest in New England, offering 55 areas of study. The department of Nursing at SCSU provides a four year undergraduate degree programme, an accelerated career entry programme, and an online RN to BS scheme.
Werth Centre for Coastal and Marine Studies makes uses of both SCSU’s urban locale and wide variety of natural habitats, engaging students in interdisciplinary research and education projects. Since 2016 the Southwest Ledge Lighthouse has been incorporated as an SCSU facility and is available for use by marine science students.
Athletics teams at SCSU are known as the Owls, and compete in the NCAA Division II. There are seven men’s sports programmes and ten women’s, which include lacrosse and softball. Opened in 1988, the Dow Field is an extensive facility that can accommodate football, soccer, field hockey and track, seating an audience of up to 6,000.
The Multicultural Centre was established in 1991 and aims to celebrate all ethnic communities on campus. Diversity speakers and presentations are hosted at the centre throughout the year.
