About Ouachita Baptist University
Ouachita Baptist University (OBU) is a liberal arts institution, based in Arkansas, about 65 miles from the capital, Little Rock. The university is affiliated with the Arkansas Baptist State Convention.
Ouachita Baptist University is organised into eight different schools and colleges: the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, Frank D. Hickingbotham School of Business, Chesley and Elizabeth Pruet School of Christian Studies, Michael D. Huckabee School of Education, School of Fine Arts, School of Humanities, J. D. Patterson School of Natural Sciences and W.H. Sutton School of Social Sciences.
In addition, students are expected to compete two classes in religion as part of the core curriculum. Moreover, upon graduation, students are expected to have completed seven credits of chapel, which is earned by regular chapel attendance during the semester.
Unless students are living with a parent or guardian, all students under 22 are required to live on campus in one of the residence halls – which are all single-gender – or in university-owned apartments.
Students have the opportunity to study abroad through programmes offered by the Grant Centre for International Studies.
Although there are no national Greek organisations on campus, there are a variety of social clubs on offer for students. These include: International Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Astronomy Club, Ouachita Psychological Society, Society of Physics and the Pre-Law Society
The sports teams are nicknamed the OBU Tigers and compete in the Great American Conference. Sports teams on offer for students include: baseball, basketball, football, soccer, cross country, swimming, tennis, softball and wrestling.
Notable alumni include Clifford Harris, a former professional American football safety who played for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League, Mike Huckabee, an American politician, and Shelley Lynn Phillips Breen, one-third of the Contemporary Christian Music group Point of Grace.
