About Spring Hill College

Founded in 1830 as the first Catholic college in the American Southeast, Spring Hill College (SHC) is a liberal arts institution based in the neighbourhood of Mobile, Alabama for which it is named. Students can experience the wide variety of cultural activities offered in this historic Gulf Coast City, which is also host to the oldest organised carnival celebrations in the nation.

At SHC there are 46 undergraduate majors and areas of concentration across a wide range of academic subjects. The Nursing major works with medical institutions such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and its students may also join the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society.

Graduate degrees are offered in five areas: Business, Liberal Arts, Nursing, Education, and Theology. Evening classes are offered to accommodate students will a full time job, as well as on Saturdays for MA theology and pastoral study students.

Study abroad opportunities are available at the Spring Hill College Italy Centre, where students live in a modernised residence hall with Italian students, and can stay for a semester, seasonal break, or full year.

Athletics teams are known as the Badgers, and compete in the NCAA Division II. There are a total of seven men’s sports programmes and nine women’s, which include indoor and beach volleyball. Also offered are club sports of bowling and rugby, and spirit squads of cheerleading and dance. With a first game played in 1889, Stan Galle Field is believed to be the oldest continuing collegiate baseball field in the US, and is situated directly next to the SHC Administration Building.

Alumni of SHC include chess prodigy Paul Morphy, Confederate Secretary of the Navy Stephen Mallory, US Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman, and Jeremiah Denton, a POW during the Vietnam War who would become a senator for Alabama.
