About Shibaura Institute of Technology

Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) is a science and engineering-based college in Japan, with campuses in the capital Tokyo and the nearby city of Saitama. The Higher School of Industry and Commerce dates back to 1927 and the modern university opened in 1949. There are now seventeen departments at the university from Mechanical Engineering to Architecture, as well as a school of Arts and Sciences, a College of Systems Engineering and Science, and a graduate department.

SIT is in established collaboration with Japanese and international engineering industries. In 2014 students at the university were part of a project designing a deepwater exploration vehicle known as Edokko No.1, which can travel up to 8000m down into the ocean and shoot high-resolution video.

Students are not directly enrolled into the school of Arts and Sciences, but the institution provides supplementary and foundation courses to students across all fields of Engineering. Some courses provided at the school are Physics, Humanities, and Physical Education. These courses are designed to engage students in a broad multidisciplinary approach, and for a course such as Physics help them develop an analytical, rational mindset that can be crucial for a future in the sciences or Engineering.

There are more than 80 subjects available in English within the Graduate School of Engineering and Science. Overseas students who wish to study at SIT must first sit an essay exam and pass an interview stage. At undergraduate level students can apply at their home university to study a sandwich year at SIT, from 17 departments and three colleges, with courses taught in English or Japanese. In 2013 a dormitory for international students was opened on Omiya campus in Saitama.
