About National Institute of Technology Rourkela

The National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela) is one of India’s premier technical colleges, and is recognised as an Institute of National Importance within the country.

NIT Rourkela’s academic departments encompass engineering, sciences, mathematics and architecture. Students at the university have a broad spectrum of courses to choose from, and can delve into specialist technical fields such as ceramic engineering, metallurgy and mining.

Research at the university is carried out at one of its high-tech centres. The university has several investigations into cutting-edge topics, such as the Centre for Robotics’ work into autonomous underwater vehicles.

Each year the university holds its Innovision festival, which celebrates student achievement through competitions and displays. Industry professionals come to NIT annually to watch the festival and run workshops, which are attended by thousands of students from NIT Rourkela and around the country.

Students can take part in the university’s annual Sports Fiesta, an inter-college tournament. Competitions are held in a range of sports, from football to kabbadi – India’s ancient sport in which teams try to score points while holding their breath.

Rourkela is known as the Steel City, and is the site of India’s first public sector steel plant, established in 1954. It’s one of the largest cities in Odisha Province, a region famous for its myriad of temples. The province is also home to dozens of wildlife sanctuaries where some of India’s most beautiful and endangered species thrive in their natural habitats.
