About St Luke’s International University

St. Luke’s International University is a private, co-educational university in Tokyo, formerly known as St Luke’s College of Nursing. It has fewer than 700 full-time equivalent nursing and other medical students, including around 250 graduate students, and around 85 full-time teaching faculty.

It developed from the High Grade Nurse Training School, which was founded in 1920 by the Christian missionary physician, Dr Rudolf Bolling Teusler. This training school was attached to St. Luke’s Hospital, founded in 1920, which established a nursing school with 10 students in 1904.

It was chartered as a three-year college in 1954 and became a four-year college in 1964. In 1988 it became the first nursing college in Japan to offer a graduate doctoral course, the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) course. It gained its current name in 2014.

Today, there is one undergraduate college, the college of nursing, and three graduate schools: nursing science which offers master's programmes, public health offering master's and nursing science offering doctorates. A doctor’s course launches in April 2019.

It has an admission rate of 20 to 30 per cent, making it a very selective insulation. In 2003, the institution was chosen as a nursing centre of excellence (COE) under the 21st century COE programme of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

The university offers a short-term student exchange programme in English for international students who wish to learn healthcare and nursing at St Luke’s College Of Nursing.

Students at St. Luke’s International University come from around the world, including China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Egypt and Ghana.
