The University of Huddersfield was the big winner at the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards 2018.

The Yorkshire institution scooped the top prize of Outstanding Leadership and Management Team, for the success of its strategy focusing on teaching quality, staff development and financial sustainability.

The judges praised the “strong sense of direction” at Huddersfield, which also triumphed in the Outstanding Strategic Planning Team category.

The School of Engineering and Digital Arts at the University of Kent was named Workplace of the Year for its staff development programme and social activities.

Other winners included Leeds Beckett University, which won Outstanding Digital Innovation of the Year for its development of a clearing chatbot, and the London School of Economics, which took home the Excellence in Registry Services title for its use of contextual admissions.

The success of the University of Glasgow’s “Meet World Changing Glasgow” campaign was recognised with victory in the Outstanding Marketing/Communications Team category, while Norwich University of the Arts won Outstanding Estates Strategy for its efforts to make its new campus a cultural quarter for the city.

John Gill, THE editor, said that the 10th anniversary of the “Thelmas” had produced a “stellar crop” of winners.

“The members of our judging panel were left inspired by the examples of individual and collective brilliance that shone through from the hundreds of entries for this year’s Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards,” he said.

“I would like to thank all of those shortlisted for making this 10th anniversary event such a spectacular celebration, and to offer our sincere congratulations to those who have triumphed.”

The awards, held in association with Advance HE, were presented at a ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, which was hosted by actor and comedian Richard Ayoade.
