The weekend saw the last council meeting of the Association of University Teachers Scotland union, shortly to turn into UCU Scotland. The union was determined to make it a memorable event, inviting all past presidents to a reception. But one, John Duffy, had different ideas about the historical significance of the event. He informed delegates gravely:
"This is the last Friday night you'll be able to smoke in a pub in Scotland."
