Here at the Centre for Medieval Studies we run a very successful training programme for our research students. Potential PhD applicants should consider opportunities for training and work experience at the institution where they will register. They should quiz departments about PhD completion times and the destinations of those who have completed; their success rates for academic jobs, postdoctoral applications or for other careers. By weighing up these factors and voting with their feet, students can ensure proper research training and careers guidance become a standard feature of all PhD programmes.
