The DPhil programme needs to include other training opportunities for postgraduates. The main reason I embarked on one was that I hoped I would have the opportunity to teach in higher education while working on my DPhil and afterwards. Very early on I became aware that there were very few academic jobs. Even though I had got a teaching certificate, I realised I would have to look in another direction. After gaining some experience of committee work I am now writing up my DPhil and working in university administration. The DPhil alone is not enough to make me employable.
