A New Zealand university is encouraging Kiwis around the world to learn the Maori language via a new online course.

Palmerston North-based Massey University said that the Toro Mai course, which launches in September, would allow members of the New Zealand diaspora to share in the resurgence of interest in indigenous culture and language that is taking place in their home nation.

The programme consists of two introductory-level courses in Maori culture and language, each taking between 16 to 20 hours complete.

Rob Stevens, general manager of Massey Worldwide, said: “Around the world, we’re seeing a renaissance of indigenous languages, including te reo Maori. Toro Mai gives New Zealanders all over the globe the opportunity to reconnect with the language, culture and values of Aotearoa.”
