I also share some of the misgivings of Michael Gruneberg (THES, September 15) and Mark Griffiths (THES, September 22) over research assessment. Research results frequently lend themselves to dissemination through books and chapters in edited works, but are assessment panels prepared to recognise the high quality of many research monographs? Furthermore, how will research panels evaluate inter-disciplinary research lying outside their particular collections of expertise?
