As one of the "peripatetic fiftysomethings" (THES, February 12), I have derived considerable enjoyment from recent holidays in Peru and Tanzania. "Seeking a new identity"? No, the answer is much simpler. It is a matter of opportunity. I welcome the Indian summer brought on by the departure of the younger generation and the benefits of retirement. Do I detect a whiff of "ageism" from author Julia Hinde? Perhaps it will not be until she joins the fiftysomethings that full understanding will dawn. I may not be around then, but my ghost awaits her in Machu Picchu, if she can still make the grade.
