While I enjoyed reading Nicholas Saunders's review of recent archaeology books (THES, December 8) I was astonished by his assertion that the study of the interrelationship between cultural development and landscape is "relatively recent".
I can recommend W. G. Hoskins's The Making of the English Landscape published in 1995, or even The Shell Guide to Reading the Landscape, by Richard Muir, published in 1981.
