Your publication of an extract from my recent letter to the Quality Assurance Agency in the story "Students reject complaints code" (THES, July 2) failed to bring out that I welcomed the QAA draft as "a very helpful basis against which the sector can assess its student complaints and appeals procedures".
My letter then, as invited, went on to comment on operational aspects of the QAA's proposals. Just one on which I commented was the question of independent review. My comments did not dispute the need for such a review but rather sought to clarify what I believed was a less than satisfactory definition of "an independent person".
