It is worth examining what befell many who retired with benefits from the Federated Superannuation Scheme for Universities.
This was a defined-contribution scheme that was the forerunner of the USS. The benefits in the 1970s were so poor that massive supplementation by the employers was needed.
The way to improve university pensions is to improve university pay.
