Slang is often vivid but readers should be aware of cultural and regional variations that can alter the picture. "Kegs" are a little more brief in Scotland than King's College might accept ("Better get hip, Daddio", THES, August ) and I recall being horrified when my mother confessed to my best friend, a policeman's daughter, that her (vine-induced) headache was due to having been "stoned" the night before.
