Robert C. Hudson was kind to quote me in his review "Balkan and other questions" (THES, June 4), albeit to justify a position that I do not support. I do say there are exceptions to all generalisations made about Central and Eastern Europe, but I argue that one has to conceptualise to make sense of political processes.
