Admission statement

The Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals' survey of universities on post-16 qualifications indicated that the sector welcomes the proposed post-16 reforms, will give weight to the proposed qualifications and will work to incorporate them into the admissions framework.

Roderick Floud reported on these views at the CVCP conference and said: "Universities have argued, at least since the Higginson report of 1988, for a broadening of the post-16 curriculum. There is no equivocation: the experience of other countries shows we need greater breadth. We therefore welcome the proposals as consistent with HE's agenda."

He also listed the actions the CVCP will be taking as a result of consultation with the sector. We will: n Recommend that universities give clear guidance to prospective students about how the qualifications will figure in admissions processes

* Assist universities in informing admissions staff about the new framework well before the first candidates with these qualifications apply to higher education

* Offer guidance on good practice for HEIs

* Consult with regulatory authorities and awarding bodies on the specifications and assessment processes for all the new qualifications.
