Students are more interested in sustainability than ever before. Times Higher Education Consultancy finds out how higher education institutions can meet the green demands of future cohorts
Sustainable development has long been considered a cornerstone of the higher education sector and the way it communicates with students. It is a readily accepted truism that modern students are socially conscious and keen for their institutions to have a real-world impact relating to the areas that matter most to them. Yet the voice of the student is all too often left out of the picture.
The Times Higher Education Consultancy team recently conducted a survey of 2,000 prospective students to address this and find out what students want from their institutions in terms of sustainability, the role of higher education in promoting sustainable development, the elements of sustainable development that matter most to them, and how these factors influence their decisions regarding where and what to study.
The findings cover topics including:

- Awareness of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- How students use sustainability when deciding where to study
- Student priority areas regarding sustainability
- Student views on the role of universities in promoting sustainability
