Letter: Too busy obeying to challenge (2)

October 12, 2001

The most deplorable aspect of the marginalisation of the intellectual in Britain is the collusion of universities.

Universities have embraced the managerial ethos and it is stifling autonomy and intellectual life for students and academics alike.

Today I received an email from a bright, critical PhD postgraduate. Having witnessed the managerial turn in academia, he decided that he might as well work in business. Alarmingly, he described how he had far more latitude in his work as a corporate banker than as a lecturer.
