SUNY Farmingdale State College

Farmingdale State College is a public college of the State University of New York, and its name is sometimes abbreviated as SUNY Farmingdale. Its relationship with SUNY gives Farmingdale State access to plenty of resources and student opportunities.

Located in the town of East Farmingdale on Long Island, the college is just one hour away from New York City itself. It was established in 1912 as an agricultural institute, but broadened its offering over the years. Technology has long been the college’s speciality and most subjects at the school have a technical angle to their teaching.

The university’s four schools are arts, business, engineering technology and health. There are almost 40 degree programmes on offer, ranging from security systems to modern languages.

Technology is explored through Farmingdale State’s four research centres, which specialise in applied mathematics, social science, solar energy and renewable energy and sustainability.

Farmingdale also has its own Aviation Center, located at Republic Airport. Students collectively spend around 5,800 hours a year in solo and dual flight instructions. It offers the only four year aeronautical science degree in SUNY, which can lead to a career as a pilot, flight instructor or safety inspector.

Horticulture students can benefit from the university teaching gardens, a 4-acre space which has been developed since the 1930s. Herb, tropical, perennial and many other varieties of garden are available to study or simply enjoy.

Most students commute to the college from off-campus. A rideshare portal is available to help students find travel buddies and lower their environmental impact. Residence halls are available to students coming from long distances away.
