California State University-Sacramento (Sac State) was founded in 1947 and today this large, public university sits on a 305-acre campus in the city of Sacramento, the capital city of the state of California.
The university was established during the aftermath of the Second World War, at a time when there was a high demand for education in the Sacramento area.
Sac State started on a rented campus, moving to the current campus five years later.
Trees were planted at the new campus and today the university is home to more than 400 species of trees. With a total of 3,500 trees around the campus, the Arbor Dar Foundation designated Sac State a Tree Campus USA in 2012.
There are now seven academic colleges at Sac State, offering a combined total of 58 undergraduate majors. Nursing, criminal justice and psychology are the largest academic majors for undergraduates, while the chemistry program is the largest in the California State University system.
The north end of the Sac State campus is home to the majority of the student accommodation complexes as well as the 3-acre University Arboretum. Also on-campus are several research and community centers and the Sacramento State University Library, home to more than 1.4 volumes and the third largest library in the California State University system. Off-campus is the Sacramento State Aquatic Center, located next to the Nimbus Dam and home to the university rowing team.
Notable former students include world-famous actor Tom Hanks, jazz singer Bobby McFerrin, news anchor Lester Holt and television host Joan Lunden.
