My review of Peter Nicholls's Modernisms (THES, September 20) was rendered incomprehensible by the omission of quotation marks around: "Marinetti's deliberate reduction . . . mechanised currents of modernity"; and "When we turn to the Anglo-American modernists . . . matrix of the new modernism".
