About National Institute of Technology Warangal
The National Institute of Technology Warangal, previously known as the Regional Engineering College Warangal, was established in 1959 as one of the first 15 regional engineering colleges in India. The institute, in the South Indian state of Telangana, was set up with the goal of providing high-quality technical education to meet the increasing demand for skilled engineers in the country.
The foundation stone for the college was laid in October 1959 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India. Initially, the college started its classes in temporary sheds in the Balasamudram area of Hanamkonda, and later shifted to its permanent site in Kazipet in January 1963. In 2002, the college was granted the status of a National Institute of Technology and renamed the National Institute of Technology Warangal.
Since then, the university has grown and expanded its academic programmes to keep up with the changing demands of the industry and of technology. It introduced the bachelor's programme in chemical engineering in 1964 and in metallurgical engineering the following year. The undergraduate programme in electronics and communication engineering began in 1971, and in 1983, the intsitute started offering BTech in computer science and engineering. The institute added MTech in computer science and engineering in 1987 and a bachelor's programme in biotechnology in 2006.
The campus has several facilities to support the academic and personal development of its students, including the Dr. VA Sastry Centre for Innovation and Incubation, which fosters entrepreneurship and supports start-up industries, and an all-hours student-run multidisciplinary workspace, which provides students access to the latest gadgets, tools and technology devices to fuel their innovative ideas.
The institute hosts many technical and cultural events throughout the year. Technozion is the annual technical symposium organised by the students, providing a platform for students from across the country to showcase their technical knowledge and skills. SpringSpree is the cultural fest, known for its diverse cultural events, music and dance performances. Finally, Cura is a significant management event organised by students at the school of management.
