The University of Sopron has a history that can be traced back to 1735 when the School for Training Mining Officers was established. In 1904 the school became the Hungarian Royal Mining and Forestry College.

Thirty years later, the college joined the Hungarian Royal József Nádor University of Technology and Economics as the Faculty of Mining, Metallurgy and Forestry. In 1996 the university was renamed the University of Sopron.
