About University of Cape Town - Graduate School of Business
Established in 1964, The Graduate School of Business (GSB) is the business school of the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa's oldest university. It was orginally sited on the University of Cape Town's main campus in Rondebosch, Cape Town, but, since 1991, it is situated at the Breakwater Campus at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, close to Cape Town's central business district.
Courses offered include the 11 month intensive MBA with an emphasis on communication, leadership and entrepreneurship; the Executive MBA, the only programme in South Africa that is targeted at senior and executive managers and leaders; the Associate in Management, launched in 1991 in order to fast-track working black South Africans previously held back by apartheid.
There is also the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration, a management development programme at pre-masters level; the Masters in Development Finance; an MPhil in Inclusive Innovation; a PhD Programme and short Executive Education courses for professionals and also Partnership Programmes for corporates, government, NGOs and SETAs. Examples of participants of the latter have included Nestle SA, Johnson & Johnson, South African Breweries, and Standard Bank.
GSB UCT has identified three key areas to focus its research efforts on: merging markets, finance, investment and trade, social innovation and sustainability and values-based leadership.
Specialist Centres at the School include: The Allen Gray Centre for Values-Based Leadership that sets out to ask difficult questions about the assumptions supporting our current, mostly mechanistic, business management models; the Bertha Centre that opened in 2011 and is the first academic centre in Africa dedicated to advancing social innovation and entrepreneurship.
Spark Health was established in 2011 through a public-private partnership between Johnson & Johnson and the UCT Graduate School of Business with the goal of collaborating with Ministries of Health to achieve an HIV-free generation. The Solution Space, an ecosystem for early-stage start-ups and a research and development platform for corporates. The Lean Institute Africa was established in 2008 by Emeritus Prof Norman Faull, a non-profit company with the aim of promoting lean management in South Africa and the rest of Africa and The Raymond Ackerman Academy of Entrepreneurial Development, a tertiary level academy offering a programme in entrepreneurial development for young people between the ages of 18 and 30.
The GSB is one of only three business schools in Africa to have triple-crown accreditation (AACSB, AMBA & EQUIS). It is also accredited by AABS, an African accreditation.
