About The University of Electro-Communications

The University of Electro-Communications (UEC), in the city of Chōfu, in the Tokyo prefecture of Japan, specialises in computer science, the physical sciences, engineering and technology.

Founded in 1918 in the Azabu District, it was originally called the Technical Institute for Wireless Communications.

The school symbol was chosen through a competition held among students and employees in 1949. The winner was Professor Sadao Matsumura, with a Lissajous figure, a mathematical figure depicting curves and loops. It represents the ratio of 5:6, corresponding to the commercial power frequencies of 60Hz in eastern Japan and 60Hz in western Japan, embodying the efforts of the university towards Japan-wide harmonisation.

The verdant, compact campus is situated in one location in the Tama area, among many other Tokyo universities, just a five-minute walk from the Chofu train station and a 15- minute train ride to Shinjuku.

The university has one faculty and one Graduate School of Informatics and Engineering.

The UEC Vision - beyond 2020 sets out a series of goals for the university. Within this, the Gender Equality Programme gives concrete plans for the creation of an environment engendering gender equality, through measures including publicity and education activities aimed at potential female applicants, building new women’s dormitories, and a childcare support system for both male and female students and teaching staff.
