Ward doing right thing for teachers

March 24, 1995

Comments, (THES, March 17), about Roger Ward, chief executive of the Colleges Employers Forum, ignored the fact that he has struck hard-won deals on flexible contracts and pay with ACM, ATL and Unison - trade unions led by very experienced negotiators.

The parallel impasse with some further education teachers is more deep-seated than gratuitous personal attacks suggest.

Changing a staff-led culture and associated restrictive practices is a long, uphill struggle and there are a few faltering voices. Most principals understand that this is short-sighted in view of DFE and FEFC requirements for an efficient and locally responsive service. That is why they support the CEF in the pursuit of a modern professional contract that reflects what many committed and versatile teachers already do to meet diverse student needs. No other team has shown the skill, stamina and verve necessary to lead the sector towards the 21st century.
