I have recently been to an interview for a senior post in a new university. I was turned down because my interview performance was "too intellectual and too analytical" (I have taught students of all ages with severe learning difficulties!). Given this, whither the place of academic rigour in the professional development of university tutors? And why be surprised when employers of graduates complain of a decline in standards? One thing is certain - university students cannot be held responsible for this state of affairs.
