Hefce has chosen the wrong moment to publish its policy statement on diversity in higher education ("Watchdog culture scares off risk-takers", THES, August 11).
In the same week that Hefce told institutions to take more risks in starting spin-off companies, the final break-up of Oxford Molecular was reported. Oxford Molecular was a spin-off company of Oxford University.
Apparently one of Oxford Molecular's problems was over-expansion.
