I was surprised to read of Hilary Wilson's experience on registration day at Royal Holloway (Letters, THES October 16). Our policy is to allow local education authority-assessed students to pay in two instalments without extra charge. No student is obliged to make even a half-payment before October 23 and we do not intend to take any action for non-payment before receiving the assessment lists from LEAs at the end of October. At registration our procedures and guidance to students were designed to reflect this policy and we are sorry that this was construed otherwise. The college will treat sympathetically any student who has problems complying with our policy on the payment of fees.
