Godfrey Keller, a lecturer in economics at Oxford University, says he would have liked an induction course (Analysis, THES , January 4).
The university provides a handbook about Oxford, its policies and procedures; guidance on teaching organisation; and a three-day programme that includes introductions to tutorial teaching and opportunities to meet key staff. In the social sciences division, new appointees are invited to meet a member of our Institute for the Advancement of University Learning to discuss professional development plans and developmental support.
We treat our new academics as professionals who wish to shape their own professional development - with appropriate support.
