All the hype over the research assessment exercise puts me in mind of two men watching an uphill cycle race with the participants sweating and straining, their eyes bulging.
The first man asks his companion why they are doing that. "Because the winner gets £25,000," is the reply.
"Yes," says the first, "but why are the others doing it?"
