Tashkent State Pedagogical University was established in 1935 as a pedagogical institute. From 1953 until 1998 it was known as the Tashkent State Pedagogical Institute. In 1998 the institute was granted full university status.
The university is named after Nizami, an Azerbaijani poet and educator from the 12th Century.
The university consists of 11 faculties: primary education, pedagogics, physics and mathematics, natural sciences, history, vocational education, foreign languages, special pedagogy, innovation pedagogy, Russian language and literature, and preschool education. Each faculty is divided into different departments which offer a range of both bachelor's and master’s degree programmes.
There is also the faculty of pre-military training, which provides students with the practical skills and knowledge required to join the military service. The faculty focuses on military training, physical culture and children’s sports.
The university has a part-time department for students seeking a more flexible approach to their studies. The department provides students with three years of academic training in their chosen field, while allowing them to continue working a full or part time job.
The Department of International Relations is responsible for developing partnerships with other higher education institutions around the world. For example, the department has facilitated the Uzbekistan-Azerbaijan friendship collaboration society.
Every year the university welcomes international students from countries such as Ukraine, South Korea, China and Azerbaijan to study at the university. These students are given the opportunity to experience life in Uzbekistan alongside their studies.
