The data shown under key statistics are those provided by the university itself in its submission to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. They represent data from the 2021 academic year, and may vary from subsequent or earlier years.
Students
This is the number of full-time equivalent students at the university.
Student-to-staff ratio
This is the ratio of full-time equivalent students to the number of academic staff – those involved in teaching or research.
International students
The percentage of students originating from outside the country in which the university is located.
Female-to-male ratio
The ratio of female to male students at the university.
Banded institutions
Precise ranks and overall scores are shown for the institutions ranked in the top 100. We then display banded ranks and overall scores for institutions in the rest of the table because the difference between their scores is not statistically significant. Precise pillar scores are displayed for each ranked institution.
Institutions that are ranked within bands are listed in alphabetical order. All the universities ranked within the same band have the same position. For instance, if the top two universities in country A are ranked in the same band (201-250), they are both ranked joint first in Country A.
Universities in Ukraine and Russia: April 2024 update
As part of our THE statement on Ukraine published on 2 March 2022, we committed to do whatever we could to “protect the interests of Ukraine’s universities at a time of such huge disruption and distress”. We ensured that those that would appear in any of our rankings would have their standing protected in this year’s ranking.
To support Ukrainian universities, we took the following steps:
- The ranking positions of all universities that meet our criteria have been processed as normal. However, after this we have considered the positions of Ukrainian universities in light of our published commitment.
- For Ukrainian universities that rank lower in the 2024 ranking than in the 2023 ranking, we have moved them to the ranking band they were in in last year’s table. We have done this in the same way that we would deal with a data correction – no other university will be demoted as a result of this action. The overall and pillar scores of these Ukrainian universities will not be changed, which can result in a discrepancy between the scores and the ranking.
However, following discussion with the Ministry of Education and Science in Ukraine, and the wider university sector in Ukraine, it was decided to remove the above adjustment in the current ranking and to provide the actual ranking position for Ukrainian universities. This will more accurately reflect the position that Ukraine higher education is in, and once the war is over will provide the informational base that Ukrainian universities can use in order to redevelop their sector.
Russian universities will continue to be given less prominence in our rankings. Their names are greyed out in the table (print and online), and their university profiles are not available on the website. This measure covers all Russian and Belarusian universities, as well as V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University (Vernadsky CFU), a Federal Russian University set up in Crimea by Russia.
Editor’s note: April 2024
After the publication of the World University Rankings 2024, a publication mapping issue was discovered, affecting Mapúa University’s considered research publication output for one of the relevant years, and therefore, its eligibility to be considered for inclusion (the institution was originally included as a reporter due to insufficient publications). This matter was reviewed under our corrections policy, and we agreed to retroactively include Mapúa University based on the corrected publication output for the affected year. The university’s position in the overall World University Rankings is 1501+. It is also included in the Physical Sciences and Computer Science subject rankings, in the 801-1000 band, and in the Engineering subject ranking, in the 1001+ band.
As per THE’s rankings correction policy, the amendment made only affects the university in question. We do not rerun the complete ranking. All other universities maintain their original rank.
