Finalists for the second Times Higher Education (THE) Awards for the Arab region, widely known as 'the Oscars of higher education', have been revealed.

THE Awards Arab World 2024 received more than 400 entries, from 15 countries/territories, which have now been whittled down to 96 finalists.

There are 12 categories this year, including two new ones, for Most Innovative Teacher of the Year (the first in these awards honouring an individual) and Outstanding Contribution to Entrepreneurialism.

Eight entrants are shortlisted in each category, and 53 different institutions are represented in all, from 12 countries/territories. View the shortlist here.

Abu Dhabi University top the shortlist table with six appearances, followed by the University of Jordan, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, and the American University of Sharjah, all with five.

The most successful countries/territories this year are Egypt with 24 appearances, the United Arab Emirates on 18, then Jordan and Saudi Arabia both on 12.

Phil Baty, THE’s chief global affairs officer, said: “THE Awards Arab World were launched to identify and promote innovative and inspirational work taking place at higher education institutions, whatever their size, reputation or focus, and wherever they may be located across the region.

“They are inclusive by design and we’re thrilled a record number of individuals and teams have chosen these awards to shout about their exceptional work this year.

“We have introduced two exciting new categories for 2024, and therefore have more finalists than ever, but it has still been a huge challenge to whittle the mountain of entrants down to the elite group you can see on our shortlist. Those who have made the cut should be extremely proud of their achievements already.

“It’s an honour for THE to host these awards and we can’t wait to celebrate all our finalists’ brilliant work at a sparkling ceremony during THE’s Arab Universities Summit in Amman, Jordan in December.”

This year’s ceremony takes place in Amman, Jordan in early December, during the 2024 THE Arab Universities Summit.
