Belmont University, based in Nashville, Tennessee, was established in 1890 and is the second largest private university and the largest Christian university in the state.
Belmont University started life as the mansion of Belle Mont, the home of one of the wealthiest couples in Tennessee, the Acklens. Belmont College opened on the site in 1890 offering education to junior college level for young women. In 1913 the college merged with the Ward Seminary and became the Ward-Belmont School for Women and in 1951 the school began admitting men and changed its name back to Belmont College. Belmont gained university status in 1991 and has grown significantly since then, offering a wide array of opportunities to its diverse student body.
Belmont is a liberal arts university and describes itself as a student-centred Christian community which aims to empower men and women from diverse backgrounds to change the world. The university offers over 90 undergraduate degrees, 19 masters and five doctoral programmes in a diverse range of subjects.
There are currently around 7,000 students at Belmont from over 25 different countries and every state in the USA. Belmont consists of 11 colleges covering everything from Sciences and Mathematics to Social Sciences to Entertainment and Music Business.
The campus is situated around the historic Belle Mont mansion two miles southwest of Nashville city centre. The mansion is surrounded by state of the art campus buildings offering facilities for staff and students. The university is also home to the Curb Event Centre a 5,000 seat arena which is used for sporting events and concerts.
