Based in the low country along the states southern coast, the University of South Carolina-Beaufort (USCB) is a public university first established in 1795. The largest campus is a 208 acre rural location near Hilton Head island, and there is also a historic campus in the city of Beaufort, which is renowned for its scenic location and antebellum architecture.

As USCB there are a total of ten academic departments offering 30 areas of study. The National Science Foundation has awarded over $600,000 in scholarship funding to the USCB Computational Science programme, and major in Health Promotion provides a student with expertise on issues such as a person’s dietary needs, and alcohol and substance abuse.

There is a thriving arts scene at USCB, and in the past events held by the Arts Centre have include a celebration of the work of American author Pat Conroy and modern string instrument performers Barrage 8. The Sea Islands Centre at Beaufort both exhibits work by students and local prominent artists. Beginning in 1979, USCB has hosted Chamber Music Concerts as part of its festival series, and previous acclaimed performers include violinists Joshua Bell and Robert McDuffie.

Athletics teams are known as the Sand Sharks, and compete in the NAIA Division I. There are four men’s sports programmes and five women’s, including soccer and softball. Both baseball and softball teams play home games at the Gray Baseball Complex in the city ofHardeeville

Notable alumni include congressman William Elliott, and climate strategist Boyd Cohen. The university colours are navy blue, sand, and garnet. The Beaufort College building was constructed in 1851, and during the American Civil War was used as a field hospital by Union soldiers.
