Xiangtan University was established in 1958 in Xiangtan, at the order of Mao Zedong, in the Hunan province of China.
The wide range of disciplines available to study there include philosophy, history, public administration, tourism management, Marxism, literature and journalism, mathematics and computer science, physics and opto-electronics, chemistry, chemical engineering, information engineering, civil engineering and mechanics, physical education, art, foreign languages, law, business, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, environment and resources. The university is particularly renowned for research and teaching in chemistry, materials science and engineering. Xiangtan puts emphasis on its undergraduate education.
Xiangtan has connections with over 60 higher level institutions around the world such as Paris Higher School of Economics in France, Humboldt University in Germany, Pennsylvania State University in the US, Swansea University, UK, Poitiers University and University of Savoy in France and the University of Leon in Spain.
Xiangtan’s student organisations centre around history, Mandarin Chinese, Marketing, Tourism, Cuisine, Gardening, Astronomy, Poetry, Huxiang Culture Research, Psychology, Wuxia Martial Arts, Drama, Debate, Volleyball, Ballroom, Billiards, Basketball, Roller Skating and other interests.
The university is located in Xiangtan City, a city of almost three million with a subtropical humid monsoon climate. The area is also rich in beautiful mountain villages such as the town of Shaoshan.
