You say that universities asked to concentrate on teaching, as opposed to research, will be "demoralised and angry losers" (Opinion, THES , November 23). Why so?
I think we could gain more satisfaction from applying ourselves to issues such as lecture preparation and assessment.
Will students always be prepared to pay fees for the privilege of being ignored by staff? My professor at LSE was often "in Seattle" midterm, and my Russian teacher insisted on two hours' contact a week. Maybe such institutions should become research and postgraduate only.
